Moving in water gives us something different: a workout companion that not only supports our nervous system as we move, but that helps us notice what our body needs and get better results because of it; the water is your best workout tool yet.
Inside Wavemakers this month, I’ve been sharing member stories about how small shifts in movement can create powerful change.
Martha’s Breakthrough
“The one-leg balance while the other is moving in various directions is VERY challenging for many, myself included. LOVE THESE!”
Martha’s discovery highlights something essential: our bodies are designed to move in six directions—forward, back, side to side, and through right and left rotation.
When we train in all six, we build the kind of strength and balance that supports us in everyday life.
The Lesson
Think of a tire spinning in the snow. It digs a groove, turning in the same track again and again, but never moving forward.
Our bodies work the same way. When we repeat only front-to-back motions—like walking, running, or cycling—we build grooves in our movement patterns. Over time, those grooves can lead to stiffness, pain, or imbalance.
But when you start moving in all six directions, you create new patterns and everything changes. These movements wake up underused muscles. They improve coordination. They build resilience for whatever life throws your way.
And it doesn’t have to be complicated.
During your next workout, try this:
Stand on one leg and gently swing the other leg forward, back, and side to side. Then add a small rotation through your hip or upper body. Use it as a recovery move between cardio sets.
At first, it may feel simple, but the results will show up later. Notice how you move afterward:
- Does your stride feel smoother on your next walk or jog?
 - Do you feel stronger pushing through the water?
 - Do you feel more stable when turning or catching your balance?

The most important test is outside the pool. Can you turn with greater ease or recover balance when something unexpected happens? That’s when you know the six directions are at work.
Your body was built for variety. When you move through all six directions, you’re not just working out, you’re investing in balance, strength, and ease; put simply, you’re training for real life.
